How to Use the Working Days Calculator
The AachaKaam Working Days Calculator is built for professionals, businesses, and exam applicants who need precise business day calculations. It operates in two flexible modes:
- Count Working Days mode: Select a start date and end date to instantly count the exact working days between them. Independently toggle whether you want to include or exclude the start and end dates.
- Add/Subtract Working Days mode: Enter an anchor date and specify how many working days you want to add or subtract to find the exact target deadline date.
How Working Days Are Calculated
A working day calculation is more complex than simple calendar math. Our calculation engine follows rigorous chronological rules to ensure 100% mathematical reproducibility:
1. Generate the full inclusive calendar day sequence between start and end.
2. Apply endpoint inclusion toggles.
3. Classify each date in a single fixed pass: Weekend → Holiday → Working Day.
4. Ensure the mandatory arithmetic invariant holds: Total Calendar Days = Working Days + Weekend Days + Holiday Days.
How Weekends Are Handled
You can choose between two research-approved weekend configurations:
- Monday–Friday: Saturdays and Sundays are treated as non-working weekend days (standard corporate 5-day week).
- Sunday Only: Only Sundays are excluded as weekends (common in retail, banking, and certain Middle Eastern or South Asian operational weeks where Saturday is a working day).
How Indian Public Holidays Are Handled
The calculator automatically integrates official Indian national and gazetted public holidays for the selected year (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, etc.). If a public holiday happens to fall on a weekend (such as a Sunday), the system handles the overlap so that the day is excluded exactly once and never double-counted.
Worked Examples
| Scenario | Dates | Weekend / Holidays | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Month (June 2026) | June 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026 | Mon–Fri, No Holidays | 22 Working Days (8 weekend days) |
| Independence Day Week (August 2026) | Aug 10, 2026 to Aug 21, 2026 | Mon–Fri, Aug 15 (Sat) | 10 Working Days (Aug 15 is Saturday) |
| Add Working Days | Start: June 1, 2026 + 10 working days | Mon–Fri, No Holidays | June 15, 2026 |
Practical Use Cases
Project deadlines: A client asks for a deliverable "10 working days from today." Rather than counting weekends and public holidays by hand, use Add/Subtract mode to get the exact calendar date, holiday-aware.
Legal and notice periods: Many statutory notice periods (resignation notice, legal response windows, tender submission deadlines) are defined in working days specifically to exclude weekends and public holidays. This calculator's endpoint toggles let you match the exact inclusive/exclusive convention your document specifies.
Payroll and attendance: HR teams calculating pro-rated salary or leave accrual for a partial month often need an exact working-day count between a joining date and month-end, excluding weekends and any public holidays that fall in between.
Delivery and SLA estimates: "5-7 business days" shipping estimates are working-day counts, not calendar-day counts — this tool converts a working-day estimate into an actual calendar delivery-date range.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting Endpoint Inclusion: Assuming both start and end dates are always counted when your specific contract or deadline might exclude them. Use the independent endpoint toggles to match your exact terms.
- Double-Counting Holidays on Weekends: Worrying that a national holiday falling on a Sunday will subtract two days. Our single-pass classification engine ensures every calendar date is evaluated exactly once.
- Manual Counting Errors: Skipping months with 30 vs 31 days or miscounting leap year February days. Browser-based date math eliminates human counting mistakes entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is Saturday a working day?
By default this calculator treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend (Monday–Friday working week). If your organization treats Saturday as a working day, switch the Weekend Schedule setting to Sunday Only.
Business days vs. working days - same thing?
Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to days that are not weekends and not public holidays — the days businesses and offices are typically open.
Does this account for Indian public holidays?
Yes, Indian national and gazetted public holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Diwali, Holi, etc.) are automatically excluded by default based on the selected year.
Can I add my own holidays?
Yes. You can add your own custom holidays or company-specific non-working days using the custom holiday date picker and name field, in addition to the automatic Indian public holidays. Duplicate dates are automatically de-duplicated, so a date isn't excluded twice.
Does a holiday on a weekend still count as excluded?
Yes, it's still shown in the named holiday list so you know it happened, but it's only subtracted from the total once — as a weekend day, not counted twice for also being a holiday. This keeps the total-calendar-days = working + weekend + holiday relationship mathematically exact, since a single day can't be excluded for two reasons at once.
How many working days are between two dates?
Working days are calculated by taking the total calendar days between your start and end dates, subtracting weekends (such as Saturdays and Sundays), and removing applicable public and custom holidays.
How are start and end dates included or excluded?
You have independent toggles for both the Start Date and the End Date. By default, both are included in the working days count if they fall on a working day.
What's the difference between the Count and Add/Subtract modes?
The Count Working Days mode counts the total working days between a start date and an end date. The Add/Subtract Working Days mode adds or subtracts a specified number of working days from an anchor date to find a target future or past date.
Does this calculator cover holidays for every year?
Public holiday data is maintained for the years shown in the date pickers. If your selected range extends beyond the years we have holiday data for, the calculator shows a clear disclaimer and still excludes weekends correctly — it just can't verify public holidays for the uncovered years.
