When to Use the Days Between Dates Calculator
This calculator is designed for pure calendar duration math โ counting every single day including weekends, public holidays, and leap years. It answers questions like "how many days until my vacation?" or "what is the exact duration between project start and completion?"
If you need to exclude weekends or Indian public holidays for business or legal deadlines, please use our primary Working Days Calculator instead. If instead you already know a start date and want to find a resulting date after adding a period of time, use the Future Date Calculator.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator converts both dates to a day count and finds the difference, which avoids the timezone and daylight-saving issues that can affect naive date subtraction. You can choose whether the end date itself is included in the total using the endpoint toggle above.
- Same date: selecting the same start and end date returns 1 day by default (Include End Date is checked by default), or 0 days if you uncheck it.
- Reversed dates: if the end date is earlier than the start date, the calculator will prompt you to check your inputs rather than return a negative number.
- Leap years: February 29 in a leap year is counted like any other calendar day, so multi-year ranges spanning a leap year are automatically correct.
- Month/year boundaries: because the calculation works in whole days rather than approximated months, results stay accurate across month and year-end boundaries.
Worked Examples
| Start | End | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1, 2026 | Jan 31, 2026 | 31 days (end date included) |
| Feb 1, 2028 | Mar 1, 2028 | 30 days (leap year February) |
| Dec 20, 2026 | Jan 5, 2027 | 17 days (spans year boundary) |
Practical Use Cases
Pregnancy and medical tracking: Counting days between a known reference date and today is common in medical contexts โ this tool gives an exact day count without manual calendar-flipping.
Loan and interest calculations: Many interest calculations are based on the exact number of days a loan or deposit was held, not a rounded month count. Getting this number exactly right (inclusive or exclusive, per your lender's convention) can matter for a precise interest figure.
Subscription and trial periods: A "14-day free trial" that started on a specific date has an exact end date โ use this calculator with the end-date toggle to check whether you're still inside the window, or use the Future Date Calculator if you'd rather work forward from the start date instead.
Age of a document, contract, or event: Rather than manually counting from a signing date or historical event to today, enter both dates for an instant, exact figure in days, weeks, and months.
Common Mistakes
- Not deciding whether the end date should count. "From Jan 1 to Jan 31" is either 30 days (exclusive) or 31 days (inclusive) depending on convention โ the same date range can validly produce two different correct answers depending on what you're using it for. Always check which convention your form, contract, or spreadsheet formula expects.
- Assuming a month is always ~30 days for quick mental math. Real month lengths vary from 28 to 31 days, so estimating "3 months later" as "90 days later" can be off by several days โ this calculator counts actual calendar days, not an approximation.
- Confusing this with a working-days count. This tool intentionally counts every calendar day, weekends and holidays included. If your question is really "how many business days," the number here will be noticeably higher than the correct business-day answer โ use the Working Days Calculator for that instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days are between two dates?
Select your start date and end date in the calculator above. The tool instantly computes the exact number of calendar days, weeks, and months between them.
Does this include or exclude the end date?
By default the end date is included in the count. Uncheck "Include End Date" above if you want an exclusive count instead โ useful when matching a formula that treats the range as start-inclusive, end-exclusive.
How many days until a future date?
Set today's date as the start date and the future date as the end date. The result shows exactly how many days remain, along with the equivalent weeks and months.
How are leap years accounted for?
Leap years (where February has 29 days) are automatically accounted for in all calculations across year and day boundaries.
What if my end date is before my start date?
The calculator asks you to double-check your dates rather than returning a negative number. Swap the start and end dates if you're measuring a range that runs backward.
Does this calculator match Excel's date subtraction?
Yes โ subtracting a start date from an end date gives the same day count as this calculator when the end date is excluded. Enable "Include End Date" here to match Excel formulas that add 1 for an inclusive count.
Does the result change based on my timezone?
No โ this calculator works entirely with calendar dates (year, month, day), not timestamps, so the day count is the same regardless of what timezone your device is set to.
What's the difference between "months" shown here and calendar months?
The "months" figure is an approximation (total days รท 30.44, the average month length across a year) meant for a quick sense of scale. For an exact calendar-month count between two specific dates, the day and week totals are the precise figures to rely on.
